Dark Academia

Where it comes from

Old university interiors — panelled, layered and slightly overfull.

Dark academia is a saturated shell with warm objects in front of it: bookcases to the ceiling, deep greens and browns, leather and brass. It suits rooms that were never bright, which makes it a good answer for a north-facing study or a basement.

Lighting

Pools rather than coverage. Desk lamps, picture lights, a fire if there is one. Ceiling light kept out of it.

• Cool white bulbs
• Sparse shelving — half-empty bookcases undo the whole look
• Modern flat-pack furniture
• Bright accent colours

Full-height joinery. The bookcases are the room; paint colour is the background they sit against.
