A 2010s reconciliation of rural surfaces with contemporary planning.

Modern farmhouse keeps the shaker doors, the apron sink and the timber, then strips the fussiness: no distressing, no signage, a tighter palette and cleaner lines. It is the most requested remodel style in the country, which is also its risk.

Lighting

Black or brass fixtures with simple shapes, warm output, generously scaled.

What breaks it

• Printed slogan signs
• Heavy distressing
• Yellow-toned pine

Where to spend

Door style and hardware. Shaker fronts with matte black or aged brass is the shorthand — get those wrong and nothing else recovers it.
