How to Light a Bedroom

The layer people skip, and the one that makes the rest of the work visible. The room most often remodelled with paint, flooring and nothing else.

BeforeAfter
  1. 1

    The plan

Keep it simple and warm. One dimmable ambient fixture plus a bedside light is enough; the mistake is a bright cool ceiling light that makes the room feel like a corridor at night.

  2. 2

    What it has to light

The elements the work touches — wall colour or paper, flooring, built-in storage, lighting — are what the lighting has to make legible. Finishes chosen under a showroom's light and lit badly at home look like different materials.

  3. 3

    Where lighting goes wrong here

Downlights above the bed, glaring at anyone lying down.

Questions

What should I decide first in a bedroom remodel?
A secondary bedroom rarely justifies structural work, so the remodel is finishes and storage. That is not a limitation — a bedroom is one of the few rooms where new floor, new colour and a built-in wardrobe genuinely amount to a different room.
What goes wrong most often?
A wardrobe placed on the wall that made the room feel wide. Flooring run in the same direction as the shortest wall, emphasising it.
Will it work in a small bedroom?
Paint the trim, doors and walls the same colour in a small bedroom. Contrast trim draws a line around every edge and tells the eye exactly how small the room is.
Can I see it on my own bedroom before starting?
Yes — photograph the space and run it through the Studio. It is generated imagery, so compare the render against your photo rather than treating it as a plan.
